An 18-year old man from the Edgware area of London has been arrested after the assault of Teddy Hall student Jeanne Marie Ryan in Plush Lounge last week. Her attack received widespread coverage on social media after she posted a #nomakeupselfie showing the cuts and bruises that she had received.According to Ryan’s report, the suspect groped her while she was dancing, before punching her in the face when she resisted. She further reports that he knocked her to the ground, before hitting her a further 6 times when she stood back up.In an interview with Cosmopolitan magazine, she said, “He seemed really angry that he hadn’t knocked me out straightaway.“I was bleeding profusely and as he walked off, I was yelling at someone to stop him from getting away but he just walked out of the club.“We had chosen to go there because it’s an LGBT club and we just wanted to dance with no hassle. Everyone who goes there thinks of it as a safe space – it’s great for dancing and not being bothered by guys.”Since the attack, Ryan has set up a JustGiving page to raise money for the Oxford Seuxal Abuse & Rape Crisis Centre. At the time of writing, the page had received 2,059 donations and raised almost £15,000.The suspect was arrested at 2am on Saturday. He has now been bailed, and is due to appear at St. Aldate’s police station on 1 April.Plush Lounge commented, “We are delighted to hear that a suspect has been apprehended, and we will continue to do everything we can to assist the authorities in the hope that justice will be swift and sure.”The police statment reads:“An 18-year-old man has been arrested and bailed in connection with a sexual assault at an Oxford nightclub. The man was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault in connection with the incident at the Plush Lounge in Park End Street, at around 2am on Saturday (22/3).The man, who is from the Edgeware area of London, has been bailed to appear back at St Aldates police station on 1 April.”

Chinese President Hu Jintao speaks atthe China-Africa co-operation summit.(All images: Xinhua Photo)Janine ErasmusMore opportunities for Chinese investment into Africa are to open up soon, with the announcement that China is to bolster its China-Africa Development Fund by an additional R19.8-billion ($2-billion).The state-run equity fund has already invested in 20 projects, totalling a massive R3.9-billion ($400-million), in Africa since it was established in June 2007. The latest development will give Chinese enterprises added impetus to sink their funds into the continent, particularly in light of the withdrawal of Western investors, many of whom find themselves under financial pressure because of the global recession.Among the major projects that have opened their doors, thanks to the fund, are the 560 000kW Ghana Power Plant, the first-of-its-kind Ethiopian Hansom International Glass factory, a cotton planting and processing facility in Malawi, the Egyptian Suez Trade Park, and the Lekki Trade Zone in Nigeria.Sino-African co-operationThe China-Africa Development Fund (CADFund) opened its first South African office in Johannesburg on 16 March 2009. This, according to the fund, is a major step for Sino-African co-operation and a positive sign for economic development in Africa. The fund, which is the first of its kind, was launched after Chinese president Hu Jintao made a pledge in 2006 to deepen Chinese aid to Africa. The president was speaking at the China-Africa Cooperation summit held in Beijing. In his opening speech Hu announced an extensive package of assistance, investment, trade and other key projects. He also said that China planned to double its assistance to Africa by 2009 – this encompasses an amount of R29.8-million ($3-billion) in preferential loans, R19.9-million ($2-billion) in preferential buyer’s credits to Africa, the establishment of the R49.7-billion ($5-billion) China-Africa Development Fund, and the waiving of debts owed to China by a number of poor African countries.South African interestIn 2008 the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China acquired a 20% stake in Standard Bank. The deal, valued at R54-billion ($5.5-billion), is the largest single investment into South Africa, and is also China’s biggest financial investment ever.China has also invested in the mining, construction and motoring sectors, as well as the electronic goods industry in South Africa, its major trading partner on the continent.South Africa, in turn, has several major investments in China. Brewing giant SABMiller owns over 50 breweries around the Asian country, while fuel producer Sasol is involved in two coal-to-liquids projects in Shaanxi and Ningxia Hui provinces with Chinese coal company Shenhua Group.Other South African companies which have ploughed money into China include boatmaker Robertson & Crane; media company MIH, part of the Naspers group; mining companies Anglo American, Anglo Gold Ashanti and Goldfields, among others; financial providers Hollard Insurance, Old Mutual, FirstRand and Standard Bank; and popular restaurant chain Spur, although the latter has found the going extremely tough.Accelerating mutual co-operationChina Development Bank chair Chen Yuan said that the fund would lead to Chinese investment in multiple industries, resulting in a better quality of life for thousands of African people. The China Development Bank has a stake of R9.9-billion ($1-billion) in CADFund, which in fact receives all its capital from the State Council-controlled bank. This initial capital is fast dwindling and most of it, according to CADFund CEO Chi Jianxin, would be disbursed by the end of 2009. He added that the second round of investments, to the value of R19.9-million ($2-billion), would begin in 2010, and would see China more than halfway to its goal of a R49.7-billion ($5-billion) investment.CADFund plans to set up offices in more African countries to accelerate the level of mutual co-operation.The fund’s main areas of interest are agriculture, manufacturing, infrastructure, natural resources exploration and industrial parks – all fields which will further the economic development of African countries on a sustainable basis. However, CADFund has received some criticism from developed nations because of its apparent support of countries such as Zimbabwe and Sudan, both of which have appalling human rights records, in a bid to gain more access to oil and other precious African resources. But supporters of the fund’s activities have struck back, saying that the US continues cordial relations with countries like oil-rich Equatorial Guinea, which ranks among the worst human rights abusers on the continent. The US is the largest single foreign investor in Equatorial Guinea and has been accused of turning a blind eye to the suffering of the people in its quest for oil.Do you have queries or comments about this article? 27 March 2013 South Africa and Russia moved to cement relations on Tuesday when President Jacob Zuma hosted his counterpart, Vladimir Putin, on the margins of the fifth BRICS summit in Durban. Nine agreements were signed in the area of education and cooperation in the fields of energy, fisheries, aviation safety, natural resources as well as transport between ministers from both countries in a ceremony that marked the Russian president’s second official visit to South Africa. Russia further pledged to assist South Africans with training on state-of-the art technology to build solar energy plants in South Africa. Zuma singled out the launch of the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul Centre (MROC) between South Africa’s Denel and Russian Helicopters. The centre carries accreditation to perform maintenance on Russian helicopters types MI-8 and MI-17. Zuma said Denel and Russian Helicopters had been in talks since 2009, and described the launch of MROC as exciting. He said the partnership between the aviation companies was made possible by the Joint Inter-Governmental Committee on Trade and Economic Cooperation between Russia and South Africa. “The facility is here for all Russian helicopters systems operators in the continent and will enable the operators to derive the benefits of Denel’s extensive after-sales support presence across our continent,” Zuma said. A further benefit for other African countries was that, through the deal, Denel-licensed technicians were available to provide on-the-job training, assisting with improved turnaround of aircraft and providing readily available spares. Speaking through an interpreter, Putin noted that intra-trade between South Africa and Russia had increased by 66.3 percent in 2012. In 2011, total trade turnover between South Africa and the Russian Federation increased by 6.42% in 2009, from US$484-million to $517-million. Putin said South Africa remained Russia’s “strategic partner”, and the two would continue to cooperate on international forums like the UN Security Council. Meanwhile, South African Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande said a memorandum of understanding on the neutral recognition of academic qualifications and degrees between his department and the Russian government open up a range of new opportunities for students from both countries. “What we did not have before is the mutual recognition of qualifications in these two countries. For instance, if a South African student has a BA (Bachelor of Science) degree, what does that mean in Russia and how do we equalise it . we want to establish equalization and allow equal access for our students,” Nzimande said. The fifth BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) summit officially kicked off on Tuesday evening with an opening ceremony and a banquet hosted by Zuma. Source: SAnews.gov.za
Auto SaveLet’s first look at the standard autosave feature. If you’re coming over to Resolve from Premiere Pro, I’m sure autosave is going to be very familiar. It does exactly what it says: it automatically saves your project every few minutes according to your settings. This brings up an on-screen pop-up when the project is saving, and depending on the power of your system, it may cause an interruption because you’ll be unable to continue editing while the project is saving. However, in Resolve 14 the autosave feature will likely be gone before you have time to sigh. This save feature will only overwrite the primary project file.Auto Save to Backup ProjectAutosave to backup project works similarly to the standard autosave setting. However, every time the project autosaves, instead of overwriting the original project file, the program creates a copy of the project. You can specify how many backups (from 1-10). When you reach backup X out of X, Resolve will revert to backup copy #1 and start to overwrite the list. Premiere Pro has a similar feature, but you can also send a backup to the Creative Cloud. If your project does crash, when you load Resolve back up, the most recently saved version should automatically load. However, you can also load a previous backup directly from the autosave panel itself by clicking on a backup save and selecting load.Live SaveLive Save is the newest addition to Resolve. Live Save will continually save every adjustment (with little impact on performance) you make in the edit. There is no pop-up or notification to let you know that this is occurring, but you can trust that Resolve is saving your project. If your computer unexpectedly loses power, or if Resolve unexpectedly shuts down, you can re-open at the very last action. For me, at this point, I feel like Live Save is like performing a trust fall on someone you don’t quite know. As 14 has only just entered into public release, we’ve yet to hear horror stories on how Live Save didn’t work, or how it bugged out the system. While I have good faith in the Blackmagic magicians, I think for next few months I’ll stick with Autosave To Backup project.Looking for more color grading articles, check out the following:How To Make Someone Look Ill Without Makeup in DaVinci ResolveReduce Unwanted Skin Shine In Post-Production with DaVinci ResolveWhy Do Filmmakers Color Grade Moonlight to Be Blue? Losing editing data to a computer crash is every editor’s worst nightmare. Learn how the release of DaVinci Resolve 14 puts this issue to rest.Cover image via Shutterstock. One heartache for video editors is to see a project crash and lose several hours’ worth of work. Thankfully, this doesn’t happen very often because of the built-in autosave in most NLEs. As these programs have advanced, so has the way autosaves work. In Resolve 14, there are now three ways you can edit with a safety net. While this article primarily addresses new users of Resolve, there’s something here for users of all levels — you might be surprised to find that the autosave menu has completely moved.Where to Find AutosaveBy default, Resolve sets autosave to “off.” Therefore, the first thing you need to do is to turn it on. Some editors prefer to keep autosave turned off because it can disrupt their workflow, but with database improvements over the last few years, the autosave pop-up will usually open and close in under a second, and now Live Save removes the on-screen graphics altogether. In previous versions of Resolve, you would find the autosave setting in Project Settings, which is located at the bottom right of the user interface. However, in Resolve 14, the autosave is now under user settings in the preferences menu (CTRL+,).As a side note, even though I always keep autosave on, as you can see in the screenshot above it’s reverted to off. This is because I’ve only just updated the software from the beta to the public release. I’m sure that this could have landed me in trouble had I not started writing about the autosave feature. Therefore, if you have updated recently, make sure you go back to the autosave settings and switch it to on.The SettingsResolve 14 gives us three autosave settings to choose from:Live Save.Auto Save.Auto Save to Backup Project.

New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony suffered a left ankle sprain Thursday night as he led his team to a 116-107 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers, leaving his status as unclear for Saturday’s game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.Anthony suffered the injury in the third quarter after driving to the basket and being fouled by Dwight Howard. The hard foul caused Anthony to hit the floor hard and land awkwardly on his left ankle, and his left leg folded back under his body as he hit the court.Anthony was able to get to his feet after the a few seconds and made his way to the free throw line. He made 1-of-2 free throws and was quickly subbed out at the next dead ball by Steve Novak.“It was a hard foul. I couldn’t catch my fall,” Anthony said after the game. “It was an awkward fall. Right now I’m sore.”He went on to add that his left ankle, knee and hip were extremely sore, but said it was too early to say to know if he would play against the Cavs on Saturday.Knicks coach Mike Woodson said after the game that Anthony would be day to day with a slight ankle sprain. Glen Grunwald, Knicks general manager said that he did not think the injury was severe.“I’ll wake up (on Friday) and see what happens,” Anthony said. Before Anthony left the game with 6:33 in the third quarter, he was having a stellar offensive performance that had fans in Madison Square Garden in an uproar.Anthony managed to make the Lakers defense look like a middle school team as he scored 22 points in the first quarter. He was only two points shy of the franchise record set by Willis Reed and Allan Houston.“I was zoned in. I was locked in. Tonight was one of those games where I had that feeling,” Anthony said.Anthony was so locked in that he finished with 30 points on 10-of-15 shooting in just 23 minutes of play when he left the game. This was the first reunion since the Olympics that Anthony had with Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni. D’Antoni was the Knicks coach last year before being fired and replaced by Woodson. There were reports that Anthony and D’Antoni clashed several times. But Anthony wanted to come into Thursday night not to seek revenge against his former coach, but to protect the Knicks’ perfect record at the Garden. They were 8-0 at home before entering the contest.Thursday’s night win pushed the Knicks home record to 9-0 and 17-5 on the season. If Anthony is unable to go on Saturday, this will be his third game that he has missed this season. He missed two earlier games this month against the Bulls and Heat with a cut to his middle left finger that needed five stitches. The Knicks went 1-1 without Anthony, beating the Heat by 20 points and losing to the Bulls. They hope to have Anthony against the Cavs, a team that beat the Lakers Tuesday night.
