Fresh off their incredible debut at The Capitol Theatre, Vermont based jam band Twiddle is keeping the momentum flowing with their exciting debut music festival, Tumble Down. Taking over the Waterfront Park in Burlington, VT from July 29-30, the festival will not only see four sets from Twiddle, but performances from a number of great acts in the jam scene.Today, the festival has finalized their inaugural lineup, with Nahko & Medicine For The People, Turkuaz, Cabinet, Kitchen Dwellers and special guest Holly Bowling. The Disco Biscuits continue to ride high in Denver, CO for the second night of their four-night Bisco Inferno run. Performing at the Ogden Theatre from June 1st through 3rd, then at Red Rocks with Twiddle on June 4th, there’s truly no shortage of great music coming from this exciting band.After a successful first night saw tDB dive into their classics, night two found the jamtronica pioneers diving deeper into their catalog and bringing out some classics. The band started the show by celebrating Allen Aucoin’s birthday with a jam session, before bringing out “Stone -> Devil’s Waltz” and a “Mulberry’s Dream” sandwich with “Catalyst” in the middle. One of the big highlights of the show was a cover of The Meters’ “Cissy Strut,” played at the very beginning of set two. Just a couple months ago, funk fools descended on the St. Augustine Amphitheatre for the first-ever Fool’s Paradise. Hosted by Lettuce, the festival featured sets from GRiZ, Nth Power, Chris Robinson’s Soul Revue and, of course, Vulfpeck.The funk darlings brought out some special guests throughout their main stage set, including collaborating vocalist Antwaun Stanley and festival artist-at-large, Snarky Puppy keyboardist Cory Henry. The collaborations culminated in an all-star jam on the song “I Wish” by Stevie Wonder, letting loose for a crazy session for all to witness. As Vulfpeck continues to gain popularity, funk faithfuls can claim they saw it first at Fool’s Paradise 2016.Fortunately, the L4LM hosted festival has some exciting pro-shot footage of this jam to share. Last night, Phish wrapped up a fun summer tour that saw the band play a total of 20 shows in 13 cities. While the band still has more performances on the docket, including two nights at LOCKN’ Festival and three nights at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park over Labor Day weekend, the bulk of the band’s scheduled travels are now complete. Naturally, while we wait for rumored fall tours and new albums to be announced, we wanted to reflect on the tour as a whole.In total, the band performed 205 songs over 20 shows, including a full eighty-four songs that were only played once all summer. In contrast, last year Phish played only 171 songs from the start of their summer tour through Magnaball, which was a total of 22 shows. In 2014, their 25-show tour brought 156 songs. Sufficed to say, Phish dug deep into their catalog and brought out a lot of classics, including jams like “The Sloth,” “The Lizards,” “Tela,” “McGrupp and the Watchful Hosemasters.” They also brought out tunes like “Let Me Lie,” “Round Room,” and “Demand,” as well as the full Fuego album (including bust outs of “Sing Monica” and “Wombat”) for the tour.The band also found some new covers for their 2016 rotation, including the biggest bust out, “Dear Prudence,” as well as “Cry Baby Cry” from The White Album. They also played another Beatles song, “I Am The Walrus.” “I Found A Reason” from Velvet Underground’s Loaded album made its first appearance since 1998, but the biggest surprise for covers was the debut of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity.” The a cappella arrangement that has been performed throughout this summer has been a perfectly Phish-y tribute to the late great Thin White Duke.As far as debuts go, the band brought out a total of eight new original compositions. Here they are, in order of their debut: “Miss You,” “Breath and Burning,” “Things People Do,” “Waking Up Dead,” “Friends,” “Tide Turns,” “Let’s Go” and “Ass Handed.” The jury is still out as to whether “Ass Handed Reprise” from last night’s closer counts as its own song. Regardless, with Trey Anastasio recently telling fans that their album was finished, it should only be a matter of time before we have new information about this upcoming release. Lest we not forget that a whole host of new Phish songs, including “Blaze On,” “No Men In No Man’s Land,” “Shade,” “Mercury,” “How Many People Are You,” “Can’t Always Listen,” “Steam” and more, have yet to find homes in the studio. And there’s still a “15-minute piece with classical percussion” that we have yet to hear, if we’re to believe Hamilton percussionist Andrés Forero. Read more about that here.Interestingly, a few songs were left off the table in 2016, including fan-favorites like “Foam,” “Dirt,” “Esther,” “Colonel Forbin’s Ascent > Fly Famous Mockingbird,” and more. While “Fluffhead” did make its triumphant return this year, the absence of “Roses Are Free” suggests that something may be in store for LOCKN’, with Ween and Phish both performing. Fingers crossed.Of course, with over 200 songs played, the one notable absence from the tour was the long jam. The band’s setlists seemed more focused on going from song to song, as opposed to stretching any particular number out. The band relied heavily on instrument swapping this summer though, bringing out the Marimba Lumina on a near-nightly basis. Having witnessed the “Drive-In Jam” at Magnaball and the New Years’ “No Men In No Man’s Land” at MSG, it’s safe to say that the band isn’t quite tapped out from their exploratory jamming, but its absence from the summer run was surprising. With a handful of exceptions, like the SPAC “Moma” and “Chalk Dust,” the Hartford “Disease” or the BGCA “Sally,” there weren’t any individual jam moments that truly stood out along this tour.That all being said, some of these sets really gel collectively, especially the first set of the final Bill Graham show or the tease-filled second set at The Gorge opener. When we consider how many years Phish was absent from our lives in the earlier part of the 2000’s, the fact that they’re still trying new things – sharing new music, busting out old songs, etc. – is a testament to the band’s incredible legacy. Come on down, you’re the next contestant on The Price Is Right! If you’re lucky, you might even get host Drew Carey to crack a joke about a jam band.That’s what happened on a recent episode of the long-standing game show, when Carey used an actual string cheese to poke fun at the lengthy guitar solos that one might expect from The String Cheese Incident. The joke came during the pricing game “Pick a Pair,” where contestants have to choose items that have the same price.When the contestant Adam chose string cheese, Carey says “The String Cheese Incident… 45 minute guitar solo…” before revealing the price of the cheese. In the past month or so, both Dead & Company guitarists – namely John Mayer and Bob Weir – have joined the acclaimed tribute act Joe Russo’s Almost Dead for extended sit-ins. Unlike most tribute bands, drummer Joe Russo has actually spent time performing with members of the band he tributes, during his tenure with Furthur. This sets Almost Dead on a unique trajectory, performing the music of the Grateful Dead with a background in, well, performing the music of the Grateful Dead.The first of these high-profile sit-ins came when John Mayer made his way to the Brooklyn Bowl back in October. Mayer has found himself in the center of the Dead universe after his full transformation into Deadheadism, catapulted to prominence by his fame and, more importantly, his talent. The guitarist is a faithful bearer of the proverbial torch, steeped in blues rock traditions.When he made his way to the Brooklyn Bowl, John Mayer didn’t just join in for a song or two – he played an entire set with Almost Dead. A set with this band is no easy feat, as Joe Russo & co truly take liberties with the Grateful Dead catalog like few before them. Fortunately, Mayer is a pro, and he handled the band’s style with a passionate energy. You can hear that in full force on “The Other One,” streaming below.While Mayer adapted to the Joe Russo’s Almost Dead style, it seems that the band “almost” adapted to Bob Weir’s style when the Grateful guitarist joined them last weekend. Weir met up with his former Furthur bandmate, Russo, his future “Los Muertos Con Queso” bandmate, Tom Hamilton, and the whole Almost Dead crew for an intimate moment at the Fox Theater in Oakland, CA. Unlike Mayer sitting in for a whole set of Almost Dead music, the band stripped down and welcomed out Weir for a five song acoustic set.This wasn’t the first time that Joe Russo’s Almost Dead went acoustic; they actually did that at the afore-mentioned Brooklyn Bowl run in October. However, when you consider Weir’s recently completed acoustic “Campfire Tour”, it’s evident that Almost Dead adapted to Weir for the set. Not that that’s a bad thing! Bob Weir is a legend, after all. Meanwhile, John Mayer, as revered as he is as a musician, is still a newcomer to the Grateful Dead world. He seems naturally elated just to play the Grateful Dead’s music, and what better way to do so than with a band who are equally as elated to play the catalog. It seems that John Mayer is almost on a level playing field as the Joe Russo’s Almost Dead crew, a member of the next generation of Grateful disciples, while Weir is O.G. Dead.All in all, these collaborations detail an underlying devotion to the Grateful Dead. The music never stopped!
The Beanstalk Music & Mountains Festival, hosted by the event’s namesake The Magic Beans, has announced that it will be returning once again to the majestic Rancho Del Rio Vail Valley after a successful first go-round at the site this past summer. Beanstalk organizers have confirmed the event will take place the weekend of June 22nd-25th, 2017, and feature a bevy of activities outside of what is sure to another top-notch lineup, including swimming, tubing, whitewater rafting, hot springs, and miles of hiking/biking trails. The Australian-based John Butler Trio will be touring North America extensively this year, working their way through number of headlining concert dates and festival performances, much to the delight of fans who have eagerly awaited their return. Already known as a force in the music world with a delightful blend of rock that appeals to jam sensibilities and unreal musical skills that frequently leaves onlookers with their jaw dropped, the trio will be bringing their music to the masses at a slew of festivals this summer, including The Ride Festival in Colorado, LOCKN’ in Virginia, and their debut at the Ravinia Festival in Highland Park, Illinois. From the ugly, insult-driven presidential election, to the endless outbreaks of violence around the globe, it seemed like every time you turned around there was more bad news to process. The general shitty-ness of of the last calendar year hit the music world particularly hard. From David Bowie in early January to George Michael on Christmas day, last year seemed to take amazing artists from this Earth at an alarming rate. Thankfully all things, bitter and sweet, come to an end. And luckily for us, the talented “FU*K 2016” lineup (led by Turkuaz’s Craig Brodhead) came together to celebrate the joy created by these amazing performers rather than quietly lament their loss, and turned the giant lemon that was 2016 into funky lemonade!As the “FU*K 2016” band gathered backstage at the venerable Howlin’ Wolf making their final plans, the pedal steel guitar strains of openers RumpleSTEELskin, a Revivalists side project, warmed up the crowd admirably. Ed Williams has always been a lightning rod for attention at Revivalists shows thanks to his dramatic style of play, often rising to his feet and bending his instrument as well as the string in wild displays of passion. Williams commanded the crowd on the mic as well, joking about the band’s lack of preparation and sad inability to even name their tunes with remarkable charm. Though they may have lacked some of the more standard Revivalists bells and whistles, they, more than made up for it with a stellar performance featuring a wonderful two-song sit-in from another “sacred steel” player, the good Dr. himself: Roosevelt Collier. After attributing a few of their instrumentals to the “Late Brittany Spears” in jest, they closed with a bombastic take on Led Zeppelin‘s “Dazed and Confused” that left the already-packed house reeling and ready for the fun yet to come.The eager audience didn’t have long to wait as the battle-tested Howlin’ Wolf crew reset the stage with an efficiency born from hundreds of nights of practice. There was barely an inch to spare when the final player took the stage and the clarion call to party, David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance,” kicked off the parade of classic hits from the fallen of 2016. Lyle Divinsky (The Motet) and Shira Elias (Turkuaz) shouldered the lion’s share of the lead vocal duties, singing with passion and charisma. As Divinsky wound through classics from Earth, Wind & Fire and Leon Russell, he showcased the range and presence that made him one of the most in-demand sit-in performers of the 2017 Jazz Fest late night circuit.The pair of George Michael covers in the middle of the set (“I Want Your Sex” and “Freedom!”) and the Prince deep cut that followed (“Sexy Dancer”) proved to be one of the tightest segments of the night, the whole room getting down to the deep, funky grooves. The double talk-box keyboard battle between Joey Porter and Steveland Swatkins on “Freedom” was worth the ticket price in itself. When it came time to honor the Purple One, the almighty Prince, the architects of the performance chose to go for the deep cuts, hitting a pair of under-appreciated gems from his unfathomably large catalog instead of more predictable popular hits.Of course, that didn’t mean that the talented lineup was afraid to take on the iconic tunes. The powerful ensemble tackled a pair of Parliment-Funkadelic tracks in honor of the late Bernie Worrell, including “Mothership Connection” and “Starchild,” before finishing the main set with a roaring rendition of the infectious Tower Of Power track “What Is Hip” for the late Mic Gillette. Revisiting the Earth, Wind & Fire catalog and the radiant spirit of Maurice White one last time for an encore of “In The Stone,” the musical collective kept the pedal pressed to the floor for one last burst of love and respect.With the recent losses of luminaries like Butch Trucks and Col. Bruce Hampton, we have already seen the beginnings of what could well be another year of heart-breaking losses. Thankfully, as the “Fu*k 2016” tribute showcase remarkably illustrated, there is a positive to be found in these troubled circumstances: We can choose to celebrate the lives of these fallen friends rather than lament their losses. For one night in New Orleans, the spirits of the artists we lost in 2016 returned to life on the stage. On Saturday night, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame officially welcomed their 2018 induction class–including Nina Simone, Bon Jovi, Dire Straits, The Moody Blues, and The Cars–at a lavish ceremony at Cleveland’s Public Hall. As always, the night was filled with star-studded performances celebrating the evening’s guests of honor.Other than special “Early Influencer” inductee Sister Rosetta Tharpe, none of the 2018 inductees date back farther than Nina Simone, who was born in 1933 and passed away more than a decade ago. The legendary singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger, and civil rights activist’s work continues to be directly referenced and reimagined in modern music by everyone from Michael Buble to Kanye West, though until this year she had somehow not been nominated since her first year of eligibility in ’86. Simone was inducted in a speech by Mary J. Blige.To honor Simone’s induction and legacy, the best backing band in the business–The Roots–held down the stage as modern-day vocal powerhouses Andra Day and Lauryn Hill each performed multiple selections from Nina’s extensive catalog, from hopeful anthems like “Feeling Good” to emotionally fraught protest songs like “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free”.Nina Simone’s music and the societal weight it carried had a profound impact on Andra Day, as it did on virtually every vocalist who followed her–particularly due to its socially conscious nature. Speaking of iconic Simone protest song “Mississippi Goddamn“, Day told Grammy.com in a 2017 interview, “It was a fight song for NinaIt ended up being an incredible anthem. She really rebelled against people who advised her against doing music like that. She was willing to say what was important at the time to the detriment of her own career.
