Senate Rushes into Executive Session

first_imgThe President Pro Tempore of the Liberian Senate yesterday announced what appeared to be a surprising motion for an executive session, minutes after the Secretary of the Senate had read the first of two agenda items prepared for the 76th day sitting of that body. One of the two items, which came under the title, ‘Business on President’s Desk,’ included a communication from Montserrado County Senator Joyce Musu Freeman-Sumo in which she submitted a summary report of the proceedings at the 5th Ordinary Session of the 3rd Pan African Parliament (PAP).  That Session was convened last month in Johannesburg, South Africa. The members of the plenary, who were already in receipt of her report, thanked her for ably representing the Senate and asked that the document be placed in the Senate’s file.It was after the reading of Senator Freeman-Sumo’s communication that President Pro Tempore Gbehzohngar Findley announced a motion for executive session and was unanimously approved. The next item under the title: ‘Report from Standing Committees’ would have been a report from the Joint Committee on Autonomous Commissions & Agencies and Judiciary, Claims, Petitions and Human Rights on a communication from the National Elections Commission (NEC), on request made to approve the proposed Senatorial Election Date.As usual, journalists who stayed around the Chamber of the Senate went home late yesterday, without knowing what was decided behind the mahogany doors of that august body. However, authoritative Legislative sources confided to this newspaper late yesterday evening that the Senate was deliberating on whether to go along with the NEC’s December 16, 2014 date for the conduct of the Special Senatorial Election. The NEC boss, Cllr. Jerome Korkoyah, had informed the Legislature that his decision stemmed from the overwhelming acceptance of the new date during comprehensive consultations organized by his Commission in collaboration with other international bodies.Like the Liberian Senate, the House of Representatives, too, went into Executive Session yesterday to conclude discussions on the election date. Reports say the House of Representatives is proposing the 16th of December, while the Liberian Senate is opting for the 30th of December, but the conference committee is proposing the 23rd to harmonize and resolve the matter. The issue about the extension of the state of emergency for 30 more days as recently proposed by Bong County Senator Jewel Howard-Taylor was expected for discussion yesterday, according to inside sources. In a related development, a joint resolution No. 003/2014 adopted by both the Senate and House of Representatives has resolved that NEC, “the agency of government authorized to hold general and Special Elections, is hereby accordingly directed to schedule the commencement of the  campaign process for the 2014 Senatorial Elections the first week of December 2014, and that the conduct of elections shall be held throughout the Republic of Liberia on December 30, 2014.”This joint resolution may seem as though the issue of the 2014 Senatorial elections has already been decided.  However, it cannot become law until it has been signed by the leadership of both Houses, the Senate and the House of Representatives.Furthermore, the fact that both houses yesterday, immediately upon convening, proceeded into executive session, gave observers the impression that there were certain urgent matters, probably including the elections, that were yet to be concluded.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Klopp calls for Roma respect amid Anfield cauldron

first_img0Shares0000Klopp want to retain Anfield’s famous atmosphere without the scenes that mired a 3-0 quarter-final, first leg win over Manchester City. © AFP / Paul ELLISLIVERPOOL, United Kingdom, Apr 23 – Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp warned the club’s fans not to repeat the scenes that saw windows of Manchester City’s team bus smashed by thrown cans and bottles ahead of their Champions League semi-final, first leg against Roma at Anfield on Tuesday.City became just the latest victims of a famous European night at Anfield on the pitch three weeks ago as Liverpool raced into a 3-0 first leg lead that laid the foundations for their 5-1 aggregate victory over the English champions in the quarter-finals. However, Klopp wants to retain the passion inside the stadium without the ugly scenes outside, which are the subject of a UEFA investigation.“In the stadium do it again and better. Outside the stadium, please show the respect we have to show,” said Klopp on Monday.“This is such an outstanding football club, an outstanding football family, known for fantastic atmospheres all over the world, so we don’t need to throw whatever at the bus of the opposing team.”The Italians will be greeted by at least one familiar face in Mohamed Salah, but it is the Egyptian who poses the biggest threat to their dream of returning to the final for the first time since they lost to Liverpool on home soil in 1984.Salah made the move from the Italian capital to Anfield just 10 months ago, and has surpassed all expectations since with an incredible 41 goals in 46 Liverpool appearances to already net more times than he did in two years for Roma. The 25-year-old was rewarded for his brilliant campaign by winning the Premier League’s Players’ Player of the Year award on Sunday evening, beating off stiff competition from Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne to the prize.“I’m really happy for him, really proud of that, it is a fantastic achievement. I think if all the other players vote for you it means most to all players,” added Klopp.“In a season like this, when Kevin De Bruyne played a season like he did, it made it even more special.”Henderson believes Liverpool’s run to the semi-finals is just the start of their success under Klopp. © AFP / Anthony Devlin– Start of something special-Despite their rich heritage in the competition as five-time winners, Liverpool haven’t been in the last four of the Champions League for a decade. And captain Jordan Henderson believes this season’s run to the semis can be the start of something special under Klopp.“Hopefully this is the start of something special with this squad,” said the England international.“The manager has been brilliant since he has come to the club. We’ve improved every season and done brilliant this season to get this stage.”However, even Klopp’s men’s 5-1 thrashing of Premier League champions City over two legs in the last eight was upstaged by Roma coming from 4-1 down in the first leg of their quarter-final with Barcelona to progress on away goals thanks to a famous 3-0 second-leg win.Klopp admitted he thought it was a joke when he was first informed of Roma’s result against Barca, but insists both sides should believe they can be European champions despite the presence of powerhouses Bayern Munich and 12-time winners Real Madrid in the other semi-final.“If anyone thinks we two are the underdogs, who cares? We are in the semi-final and can go to the final.”However, Roma coach Eusebio di Francesco warned that the pace of Liverpool’s prolific front three of Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino — who have combined for 83 goals this season — offers a very different threat to Barca’s Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.“We are facing a different rival from Barcelona and we need to be ready for that different challenge,” said Di Francesco.“We have to play our football, impose our style and make the most of Liverpool’s weaknesses.“We showed in the last league game we have progressed in our mentality and we need to show that again.”0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today) read more

‘Africa is the next large growth region for the world’ – says Goldman Sachs

first_imgTsabeng Nthite – “Transformation and innovation is the name of the game and that is what inspires me about South Africa and the African continent,” says Goldman Sachs Partner MD, Head of Investment Banking in Sub-Saharan Africa – Mr Colin Coleman.Coleman shared his insights on what makes South Africa an attractive investment destination during his interview with Brand South Africa for the CEOs Know campaign.Inspired by the need to build a positive reputation for South Africa, Brand South Africa – in collaboration with Business Leadership South Africa launched the CEOs Know campaign to position South Africa as in ideal investment destination. The CEOs Know Campaign features various CEO’s from multinational corporations based in South Africa, who share insights behind their continued investment into South Africa. The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. is a leading global investment banking, securities and investment management firm that provides a wide range of financial services to a substantial and diversified client base that includes corporations, financial institutions, governments and individuals. Founded in 1869, the firm is headquartered in New York and maintains offices in all major financial centers around the world. The South African Governments Invest SA initiative which formalised a relationship with the World Bank to improve the country’s ease of doing business, coupled with dynamic and stable economy, solid economic fundamentals, prudent fiscal management and monetary policies are distinguishing factors that make South Africa an ideal investment location – said Coleman.A recent assessment by Goldman Sachs indicates that South Africa is part of the “next big emerging market story” of 2018. It notes that the growth cycle is picking up after an earlier downturn in investment growth. It says that improved confidence is likely to lead to a better outlook for growth and investment. This is confirmed by the South African Economic Update released this month by the World Bank. While the economy’s performance is improving, it notes that higher growth will require ambitious structural policies. It estimates that a successful conclusion of the Mining Charter deliberations, for example, could increase investment in the sector by 25 percent.“South Africa is the hot emerging market for 2018 because it stands out in the post transition of the Presidency to Cyril Ramaphosa as an environment which offers opportunity. This political change together with the President’s economic policy , give a clear roadmap as to where South Africa is going,” said Coleman.President Ramaphosa recently announced that a central priority for government this year is to encourage significant new investment in our economy. Investment is necessary for the growth of our economy and the creation of jobs on a scale that will significantly reduce current levels of unemployment.Coleman noted that South Africa’s modern market environment has seen South African companies venturing into the African continent to expand operations and has also afforded global corporates the opportunity to establish their business in South Africa.“We at Goldman Sachs see South Africa as a base for out African business and so do many other multinationals – and this is attributed to sound institutional framework built on the foundation of a Constitutional Democracy, sound regulatory framework as well as commercial and legal practices, which are line with those in the rest of the developed world.“All of these attributes position the country positively and it is through the independence of institutions that the nation will be able to maintain business confidence,” added Coleman.last_img read more

Fake food: Is it better for you and the environment?

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest By Don “Doc” SandersMany activists proselytize how bad animal agriculture is for the environment. Most of them operate on the premise that big is bad and that we should return to small family farms — or eliminate food animal agriculture altogether. They also advocate a vegan diet. But I’m not concerned about people who choose that lifestyle for themselves, so long as they don’t mess with my getting a steak once in a while. Regardless of what they say, I’m convinced that we can’t rely solely on small family farms if agriculture has any chance of providing worldwide food security. This leads me to my topic for this month: the recent introduction of fake foods. Namely, the increasing presence and popularity of plant-based alternatives to dairy and meat. Are these fake foods based on good or bad nutrition? Well, it depends.Promoters’ claims of health benefits are common for alternative foods. For instance, Whole Foods, Walmart, Amazon and others tout Himalayan pink salt (HPS) for its supposed health benefits due to alleged trace minerals. And like many other products, HPS is promoted for being made without GMO ingredients. This GMO claim, of course, is a bunch of hooey, because salt does not have genes. It’s not a living organism. And many other products promoted by large food retailers as non-GMO are made of ingredients, like oats, that are never genetically modified. Himalayan pink salt, mined in Pakistan, is just ordinary salt that’s pink. Like the good old Morton brand, HPS contains a smidgen of trace minerals. Though HPS marketers claim the salt may contain over 80 minerals, these minerals account for only 2% of HPS. The rest is sodium chloride. That is, salt. I only mention HPS because it illustrates the length that food marketers will go to make a buck. You can also find at the grocery almond milk, oat milk, soy milk and a host of other spin-offs that allegedly supply required nutrients. At best, an eight-ounce serving of any of these products supplies about a third of the nutrients in an eight-ounce glass of whole milk. This is provided you aggressively shake up the sludge from the bottom of the fake milk carton before pouring. The sludge contains most of the added nutrients that allegedly boost the nutritional value. While you are savoring a fresh glass of one of these alternative “milk” products this: Although Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) claims the environment is being ruined by cow farts, the credible environmental research of Dr. Frank Mitloehner at UC-Davis shows quite the opposite. His research shows that food animal ag accounts for only 2.8% of the global environmental impact. AOC and the naysayers she references claim livestock contribute 28% of the ill effects on the environment.I don’t want to get too technical, but any of you working around cattle know that cow farts aren’t a major issue. Rather, cows burp frequently. They burp methane gas.I visited Dr, Mitloehner’s lab at UC-Davis a few months back. He maintains a group of cows in one facility and a group of fattening steers in an adjacent lab. After repeated trials, his work demonstrated that the burps of cattle contribute about 2.8% to global warming because of methane release. His research also showed that methane in the environment does not increase from cattle ruminations, but from a natural cycle. As more methane is released into the atmosphere, existing methane in the air is being degraded at about the same rate as cattle release methane. His work demonstrated this occurs in a 10-year cycle. In the meantime, numerous start-up companies are developing fake meat with the stated goal of eliminating the cattle industry by 2035. They each claim that fake meat is healthier and/or more wholesome for you than real meat, plus being good for the environment. These claims are not supported by science. These alternatives are commonly marketed as burgers made from plants, which sounds pretty wholesome. In reality, they fully qualify for the NOVA definition of “ultra-processed foods,” which many (or most) nutrition scientists, dietitians and clinicians warn us about constantly. In 2018, a report in The British Medical Journal uncovered a link between ultra-processed foods and an increased risk for cancer. And now, most recently, a study from JAMA Internal Medicine associated a high consumption of ultra-processed food with an earlier death.Faux hamburger patties are as ultra-processed, with almost identical ingredients, as dog kibbles. I challenge you to look at the three ingredient labels I provide here, and tell me which one is for vegan dog food and which two are recipes for fake meat. No peeking at the answer! From:   (see bottom for answer)From left to right is  Beyond Meat, premium vegan dog food, Impossible Burger.last_img read more

Getting the Most Out of Online Training

first_imgIf you’ve resolved to learn some new skills in 2013 then these simple tips will help you get the most out of the time, money and energy you invest in improving your skills.Online training can be amazing. Personally I love it, a lot. Used well it is a great way to learn the fundamentals of a new software program or recreate some of cool things you’ve seen other people do.If you’re a self starter and don’t mind putting aside some of your valuable time to really get into the training you’ll definitely reap far more than you sow. But as they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions and it is very easy to simply buy the training, download it and feel good about how ‘one day’ you’ll learn all that good info. These 5 tips for online training may seem obvious, but if you follow them you’ll be well on your way to expanding your skill set.1. Break It UpA lot of online training is pretty extensive, often being 7, 8, 10 hours in length. It’s great that you’re really getting a decent bang for your buck, but that’s quite a lot to get through, take in and digest.  Personally I try to go through a couple of hours at a stretch and then my brain feels pretty full.Doing a little more often is a better way to really take it all in.  Set a schedule for working through the training, maybe an hour or two every few days.  Be consistent.  This will ensure that you don’t burn yourself out in one sitting and actually follow through with your training investment.2. Follow AlongDon’t just sit there passively watching the instructor clicking away and making it look very easy. A lot of online training come with downloadable project files which allow you to follow along with them, doing what they’re doing at the same time. By doing this you’ll take in far more of the training than if you only just watch it.This is why I like watching tutorials on my home set up as it has two monitors, one for the training and one for me to follow along. It also helps to be able to replicate (or fail to and figure out why) what they are doing as the first way to learn the software or technique, rather than trying to adapt what they’re doing to your project on the first go around.3. Take NotesTaking notes might feel like a throw back to school days, but its one of the best ways to really take in what you’re learning (as you have to understand it, interpret it and scribble it). It also means that when you want to quickly jump to the bit of information you want, you don’t have to scroll through the other 5 minutes of video to find it.  It’s right there at your finger tips.4. Adapt the Techniques to Your WorkThe point of training is to learn general techniques that you can then adapt and use in your real world scenarios, not just only replicating the instructors specific example time and time again.  While going through training exercises be thinking of how you can adapt the processess and techniques to your own work.  Successfully applying these fundamentals to your projects will be the true measure of whether you have truly learned anything.5. RepeatKnowing that you’re not going to take it all in on the first time around is a good way to start, as it frees you up to go back and dip in for refreshers as many times as you need to. Going back to your notes (it’s important to make them in the first place) is the shortcut to this.  If your notes are insufficient, keep re-watching and updating your notes as you go.Online Training Resources for Video ProsSites that have everything –, Creative Cow, Class on Demand, Video2brain, Macprovideo.  All of these sites have a vast wealth of online training for different programs, from Microsoft Office to Lightroom, plus all other usual suspects.
